Before being called New York, the city was briefly named "Nouvelle-Angoulême" (New Angoulême) on French maps for nearly a century, after being named by explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano in a letter to the King of France. Later, the area came under Dutch control and was renamed, before finally becoming New York after the British took over. Today, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is the only remnant of this time.
